Preprinted Postcard Text
(Back): On Orton Plantation is the only surviving mansion of the
Colonial period on the Cape Fear River. The house was built in 1725
by "King" Roger Moore, so called because of his imperious manner. It
was subsequently occupied by his grandson, Gen. Benjamin Smith,
Governor of North Carolina, 1810-1811. This view shows part of the 5
miles of gardens showing azaleas, winding garden paths and hanging
Spanish moss.
