Mary Beth Leyden
(Beth Britt) - Southport
Mary
Beth Leyden, (Beth Britt), age 64, died unexpectedly on
Tuesday morning, February 21, 2012 at New Hanover
Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the
late Gaynelle and George Leyden of Athens, Georgia.
Surviving are
Beth’s daughter Ashley and son-in-law Tommy Phillips and
grandchildren Davis and Jack of Charlotte, NC; son
Donald, Jr. and daughter-in-law Kyrstin and
granddaughters Devin and Sophea of Bridgeport, PA;
sister Carol and husband Jim Warnes and nieces Kathryn
and Nell Warnes of Athens, GA; and brother George
Terrell Leyden of Athens, GA.
Beth was born in Alabama and grew up in Charleston, SC.
For several years she lived in Raleigh, NC where she
worked as a registered nurse in private practice and in
marketing at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals. She also spent time
in Rochester, NY; Paris, France; and near Philadelphia
before retiring in 2003 to her waterfront home on Barnes
Bluff Drive in Southport.
Throughout her life, Beth contributed many hours to a
variety of causes, including Hospice, Brunswick New Hope
Clinic, and Southport Presbyterian Church where she most
recently served as treasurer of Women of the Church.
Last year, she spent a week in Appalachia with her
church group building homes for the impoverished. She
served on the Oak Island Capital Planning committee, the
Oak Island Beautification committee, and was a member of
the Southport Women’s Club. She was a gourmet cook, a
talented decorator, a music and bridge lover, an
enthusiastic traveler and had enormous affection for her
dogs and cats. She will be dearly missed by her many
family and friends.
A memorial service will be 2:00 pm Friday, February 24,
2012 at Southport Presbyterian Church.
