Mrs. Dorothy
Frances Searles age 91 of Southport died Tuesday
February 21, 2012.
Mrs. Searles was born in New York City on March 11, 1920
and was the daughter of the late Henry and Catherine
McAllister Macetty. She was preceded in death by her
husband of almost 60 years, David Patrick Searles in
2002. She spent most of her life in New Jersey raising
her family until 1973 during which time her husband’s
job required the family to move to Johnson City, TN.
where they stayed until his retirement in 1993.
Following his retirement they moved to Southport, NC.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
During World War II Mrs. Searles drove military cargo
trucks transporting troops and supplies for training
exercises at Fort Ord, California where her husband was
stationed at the time. Following the war they returned
to New Jersey where Dorothy dedicated her time to raise
her family and care for her aging parents. She later
became manager of food services for several large
companies including Yardley Cosmetics and Scott Foresman
Publishing in New Jersey until her retirement. Following
her retirement she dedicated many years of service
volunteering in hospitals and teaching young children to
improve their reading skills.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Baker and
husband Terry of Myrtle Beach, and Lorie Alderfer and
husband Donald of Supply, NC; Her son, Daniel David
Searles and wife Lucy of Caguas, Puerto Rico Five
grandchildren, Terry Baker Jr. and wife Carla, Laura
Liga and husband Tony, Erin, Jill, and Molly Alderfer;
two great grandchildren, Jennifer and Daniel Baker.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday February 28, 2012
at 1pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend
Trent Watts officiating.
The family will receive friends at Peacock-Newnam &
White Funeral Service, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport on
Monday February 27th 2012 from 2-4 pm and also 6-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Lower
Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, C/O Brunswick
County Facility, 1414 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC
28401.
