Allene Clair Sides
Self - Southport
A native of
Winston-Salem, NC, Allene was the daughter of the late
Russell Harrison Sides ,the late Flaville Agnes Sink
Sides and the wife of the late Heindle Brandt ( H.B.)
Self. She was a 1932 Reynolds High School graduate where
she played the violin in the orchestra. She was one of
the oldest active members of the First United Church of
Christ where she was past leader of the Girl Scout
Troop. Allene was one of the original campers at the
then newly founded Roaring Gap Girl Scout Camp.
Allene and her family were a host family for an exchange
student from Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America, which
was Winston-Salem’s first sister city. For many years
Allene was a member of the Triangle Volunteer Fire
Departments’ Ladies Auxilary. This was the first
volunteer fire department in Forsyth County which her
husband, H.B. Self, helped organize. For eighteen years,
she was a tour guide at Old Salem. She was also a former
member of the D.A.R. and the Forsyth County Homemakers
Her interests included playing bridge,reading and
traveling. She toured Cuba with her family when Batista
was still in power and travelled to a multitude of
European countries. When Allene visited the Holy Land,
she stood on the banks of the Jordan and joined in
singing “Blessed Assurance”.
Allene is preceeded in death by her husband, Heindle
Brandt Self; her sisters, Pocahontas Sides Heckard and
Foryst Sides Wright, her brother Richard Holmes Sides
and son-in-law Dr. William Grady Sugg. She is survived
by two daughters: Ann Self Haring Killeen and husband
Patrick of Southport, NC: Judy Self Sugg of Marion, NC;
three grandchildren David Brandt Haring and wife Barbara
of Arlington, VA; Heather Ann Sugg of Dawsonville, GA,
and William Jason Sugg, wife Amber and two great
granddaughters Micha Akiko and Skylar Jaylynn of Myrtle
Beach, SC. Also surviving are two sisters; Nancy Sides
Garrett of Walkertown, NC., Bettie Sides Dorton and
husband Dr. Lamar Dorton of Statesville, NC; and brother
Alfred Daniel Sides of Winston-Salem, NC.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life Service will
be held on Sunday, July 29 at 11:30 at the First United
Church of Christ, 1912 Waughtown Street, Winston-Salem,
NC 27107. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
the First United Church of Christ, 1912 Waughtown
Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or the Waughtown
Cemetery ,2833 Birchwood Drive, Winston-Salem, 27103.
