Reverend Louis C. “Corky” Melcher Jr. - Oak Island

Reverend Louis Chester “Corky” Melcher Jr., 82 of Oak Island, died Monday, September 5, 2011 at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.

Reverend Melcher was born June 5, 1929 in Knoxville, TN the son of the late Right Reverend Louis C. Melcher, Sr. and Mary Curry Melcher. Reverend Melcher was the Rector Emeritus of The Church of Good Shepherd in Raleigh, where he had served as the minister for 27 years. While in Raleigh, he had served as President of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Reverend Melcher had served in numerous other churches as Rector and as a substitute minister in Eastern North Carolina since his retirement. Reverend Melcher had been involved with many civic and volunteer activities. Reverend Melcher was the family patriarch and he officiated over family weddings and baptisms. He was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport. Reverend Melcher was preceded in death by a brother Robert Dale Melcher.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years Jo Ann Melcher of the home; two sons Louis C. Melcher III and John Victor Ogle Melcher both of Oak Island; a daughter Mary Jo Melcher Rogers and husband David of Myrtle Beach, SC; a granddaughter Candice Melcher; a step-grandson Robert Lee Barton; two sisters, Mary Syrdahl of Houston, TX, and Katherine Dooley of Statesville, NC; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2011 at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Barry Kubler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, 205 East Moore Street, Southport, NC 28461.
