John Richard “Richie”
Dosher - Southport
On
Tuesday evening, August 2, 2011, “Richie” John Richard
Dosher passed peacefully at New Hanover Regional Medical
Center after a brief illness surrounded by his faithful
family and friends. He was born in Southport, NC on July
16, 1935 to the late, Hermine Boera Dosher, Arnold and
Thomas Hoyle Dosher, Sr. He was preceded in death by a
brother, Albert “Abby” Arthur Dosher.
He is survived by
his loyal wife of 46 years, Roberta Dosher; loving
daughter, Kimberle Dosher Adams and husband W. Dean
Adams, grandson R. Dalton Adams of Southport, step grand
daughter Stephanie Adams and her three children of
Stuttgart, Germany; devoted son, John Richard Dosher,
Jr. and wife Erika Ruh Dosher of Boiling Spring Lakes;
brother, Thomas Hoyle Dosher Jr. and wife Betty M.
Dosher of Southport; one sister, Hermine “Sissy” Dosher
Hall of Harrells; four nephews and four nieces; and many
close friends including his life long friend Roy Daniel
and special friends Ronnie Caster and Donald Sellers of
Southport.
Graduating from Southport High School he proudly served
his country as a flight medic in the United States Army.
He was a past Master of the Pythagoras Lodge 249 and a
Thirty Second degree Scottish Right Mason. He attended
the Ellison’s Upgrading School in Baltimore, Maryland,
where he earned an Inland Masters unlimited license,
first class pilot for the Cape Fear River, second mate
oceans – steam or motor any gross tons, a rare
accomplishment. Richie chose to remain close to his
loving family and home in Southport. His love for the
waterfront led him to a career as the captain of the
Fort Fisher Ferry for thirty years.
Richie will be remembered for his great sense of humor,
practical jokes, his daily five o’clock waterfront
cruises around Southport, sitting on his favorite porch
swing, his love for hunting, fishing and anything sweet
to eat, his ability to fix anything, cooking oysters at
the family farm but perhaps most of all just being home
surrounded by his family, loyal friends and great
neighbors.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m.,
Saturday, August 6, 2011at Northwood Cemetery in
Southport. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Daniel,
Ronnie Caster, Donald Sellers, Frank Sellers. The family
will receive friends immediately following the service
at the Dosher residence.
