Butch Wheeler, Sr. -
Oak Island
Mr.
“Butch” Dennis Leon Wheeler, Sr. age 69, died Sunday,
December 11, 2011 at New Hanover Regional Medical
Center. He battled heart disease for 16 years. He fought
a good fight through the end.
Butch was born
August 6, 1942 in Greensboro North Carolina to Grace and
J.T. Wheeler. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1959,
serving in Guam, the Philippines and the Bay of Pigs
invasion during the Cuban Conflict. He received a
presidential citation from President Eisenhower for
volunteering to go out in rough seas to rescue persons
on the USS Trieste in the Mariana Trench near Guam on
January 23, 1960. Butch owned a commercial roofing and
flooring company in Greensboro. He retired to Oak Island
where he was owner at Cash Unlimited Pawn, Inc. He could
be found any day there with his Civil War and World War
II collectibles. His love of fishing was his favorite
hobby. He fished the pro-bass circuit in the 1980’s.
Butch loved salt water fishing and had operated a
charter boat at Blue Water Point Marina. It was a real
joy to him to fish the US Open this year. His health had
finally allowed him to do that before his passing. Butch
was preceded in death by his mother Grace Wheeler, his
father J.T. Wheeler and granddaughter Cassidy Miranda
Poole.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, June Wheeler,
his son Dennis Leon Wheeler Jr. and wife Amaya of Oak
Island, his daughter, Tammy Wheeler LeVan and husband
Darrell of McLeanville NC, his daughter, Angiela Wheeler
and fiancé Craig Quick of Rockingham NC, daughter Faith
Wheeler Shore of Oak Island. He is also survived by his
grandson’s Dustin Wheeler his first mate, Tyler LeVan,
Jordon LeVan and, Tristyn Shore, his granddaughters,
Brittany Poole, Lindsey LeVan Townsend and husband
Joseph and his great grandson Skyler Farlow. Butch was
sincerely loved by all. He was a loving husband, father
and grandfather. He fought his health condition and beat
the odds for many years out of love for his family. He
was a special man and he left his mark in all our
hearts. Butch is with the greatest fisherman of all,
Jesus Christ. He will be dearly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday,
December 15, 2011 at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral
Service in Southport with Reverend Bill Davis and
Reverend Bill Van Meter officiating. The family will
receive friends one hour prior to the service.
