U.S.S. Perch Envelope

Description: This item is known in the stamp and postcard collecting world as a cover, which is simply an envelope. This is a cover from the U.S.S. Perch. This cover was mailed from Southport, NC in mid January of 1937 when the Perch was passing through the area on a Shakedown Cruise before reporting for duty in November of 1937 to the Pacific Fleet. The U.S.S. Perch was a 300 foot, porpoise-class, diesel submarine. The Perch was captured by Japanese forces in March of 1942 while landing troops off the coast of Soerabaja, Java. 54 sailors and five officers were taken prisoner by the Japanese. The Perch was discovered by accident on Thanksgiving day 2006 by a group of divers and photographers searching for the remains of the British cruiser Exeter off the coast of Java.
