Description: This article appeared in the December 28, 2005 edition of The State Port Pilot. This article reports that Long Beach Pier located on Oak Island, NC is scheduled to close for business on January 6, 2006 and is scheduled to be demolished in January or February of 2006 to make way for new oceanfront homes.

Editor's Update: As of June 24, 2006, Long Beach Pier has yet to be demolished, as originally planned. The building that once housed the grill and tackle shop has been demolished as originally planned. The pier still stands, as of this date, in substantially the same condition as when the pier closed for business on January 6, 2006. Reports indicated that the developer of the property has decided to leave the pier for private use by the future residents of the property.
