Spotlight: Silver
Coast Winery
The Silver Coast Winery,
located on the inland side of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, is
the first and only winery located in Brunswick County. The 40 acre
winery was started in 2002 by Maryann
and Bud Azzato. The Azzatos started the winery out of their passion
for fine wine and their desire to share good wines with friends and
guests.
Currently, the winery makes
thirteen different wines, with a new wine, a Viognier, being bottled
in April of 2005. Rumor has it that the winery’s on-site wine maker,
Dana Keeler, “talks to the grapes and the grapes talk to him.”
Apparently, these conversations have paid off. Although the winery
was started less than three years ago, they have already won 58
awards for their wines. Just a few of their award winning wines
include their 2002 Touriga (also known as Cape Fear Blood Wine),
2002 Premium Chardonnay , 2002 Seyval Blanc, 2002 American Oak
Chardonnay, 2002 Sangiovese, 2002 Merlot and Holiday Red.
All of the labels for their
wines are designed by local artists. When a new wine is going to be
introduced, the Silver Coast Winery holds a label competition that
is open to local artists. The winner of the competition will have
their design featured on the label of the new wine. On February
24th, 2005, The Silver Coast Winery announced that Tricia Vanderburg
won the label competition for their new Viognier wine with her
depiction of aviary life in the marshlands. The winery also promotes
local artists in their art gallery, where they often hold art
openings.
In addition to the wine making
facilities, Silver Coast Winery’s facilities include several gift
shops, a large outdoor patio area, a barrel room and a wine tasting
room. The barrel room, very popular for
wedding receptions and other festivities, is decorated with
beautiful wooden oak barrels. The barrel room also has its own
indoor waterfall created by local artist Doug Campbell. In addition
to weddings and other private parties, there are many events at the
Silver Coast Winery that are open to the public, such as their Blue
Grass Festival, Purple Feet Festival, Bacchus Beach Music Bash,
Oktoberfest and more.
The wine tasting room is
beautifully decorated and offers three wine tasting choices. You can
choose to taste an array of their white wines or red wines for $5,
or you can have a full wine tasting which includes an array of both
white and red wines for $9. The price
for all of the wine tastings includes a souvenir wine glass. You can
purchase their wines by the bottle or by the case in the gift shop,
or join the wine club and receive automatic shipments of wine. If
you are ever in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, be sure to visit
the winery’s new tasting room and art gallery at South Park Mall.
The Silver Coast Winery is
located on Barbeque Road on the inland side of Ocean Isle Beach.
Part of the winery is located in the building that was formerly
Sim’s Barbeque. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11:00am
to 6:00pm and on Sunday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm, with seasonal hours
between January and March. They offer free tours of the facilities
where you can learn about the wine making process, and the wine
tastings are available daily. The winery can be contacted at
910-287-2800. To plan an event at the Silver Coast Winery, please
ask for Debra Kordiak, the on-site event coordinator.
