Veteran Recognition Ceremony Speaker Announced

Mr. Jeff NewtonJune 18, 2013 - Southport, NC - The North Carolina 4th of July Festival announces Mr. Jeff Newton keynote speaker for the annual Veteran Recognition Ceremony on July 2, 2013.

Mr. Newton is a producer for 60 Minutes and has been working at CBS News for the past nine years. He has been covering war for newspapers, wire services and television for 19 years. His first war was in Bosnia in 1991 at age 24. Since then, he has traveled to 71 countries covering some of the top news events in the world, from Afghanistan to Iraq to Kosovo. In 2006, his work with Correspondent Lara Logan in Ramadi, Iraq, was awarded a national Emmy Award, the David Kaplan Award for overseas war reporting by the Overseas Press Club of America and an Edward R Murrow Award from Radio and Television News Director Association. The Louisville, KY, native won the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for excellence in broadcast and digital news in 2011. Newton won the DuPont Award as producer of “A Relentless Enemy,” the September 2010 segment about a U.S. military outpost on the remote border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Veteran Recognition Ceremony is a mainstay of the July 4th Festival. During the many celebrations, it allows the public to stop and remember those who serve for our country, protecting our freedoms. The public is invited. We encourage all Veterans in the area to attend. This year’s event is sponsored by Carillon Assisted Living. Dinner will be provided. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. on July 2nd and will be held at the Southport Community Building.

For over 200 years the city of Southport, N.C. has celebrated the nation’s independence. Annually, over 50,000 people visit during the festival. With events ranging from arts & crafts in the park, vendor booths, street dances, gallery walks and of course a parade, the area is known as the official celebration location for the state of North Carolina.
