BEMC Awards Sports Camp Scholarships To Local Students

May 15, 2013 - Brunswick County, NC - Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is awarding two local students Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarships to summer basketball camps at two of the state's largest college campuses.

Clara Elizabeth Tyson of Leland Middle School will attend the N.C. State Women's Basketball Camp, and D'Kwanshe Stanley of Shallotte Middle School will attend the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp, both on full scholarships from BEMC. Clara is the daughter of Beth Tyson. D'Kwanshe is the son of LaChella and Joseph Stanley.
"Brunswick Electric is pleased to give these outstanding students the opportunity to experience life on a college campus and the chance to learn from NCAA coaches and student-athletes," said Judy Gore, vice president of customer services at BEMC. "These camps teach valuable lessons that students can apply in their lives both on and off the court."

Clara and D'Kwanshe were selected by a panel of judges based on an application that included academic achievements, extracurricular activities, an essay and a short-answer question. D'Kwanshe's selection shows that persistence pays both on and off the court, as this was the second year that he applied.

At the overnight camps, students will stay in dorms and soak up lessons on the hardwoods from the collegiate coaching staffs and student-athletes. The staff of the N.C. State women's camp includes head coach Wes Moore, who joined the Wolfpack women in April after 15 seasons at Chattanooga, and current N.C. State women's basketball players. The Roy Williams camp is led by two-time NCAA national championship coach Roy Williams and current and past Tar Heel basketball players. Staff at both camps will work closely with each camper to develop fundamental basketball skills and encourage them to work as a team and set and achieve goals.

The N.C. State Women's Basketball Camp will be held Aug. 1-4 in Raleigh, and the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp will be held June 15-19 in Chapel Hill.

The all-expense paid scholarships, sponsored by North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives, provide funding for more than 50 middle-school students from across North Carolina to attend basketball camp. This is the tenth year that Touchstone Energy has awarded young women scholarships to attend an N.C. State women's basketball camp and the eighth year that the cooperatives have sent young men to the Roy Williams camp.
