The Southport Times Acquires Rare Southport Advertising Trade Card

Steamer "City of Southport"

Learn More About This Trade Card

December 6, 2012 - Southport, NC - The Southport Times has acquired a unique and rare advertising trade card advertising the Steamer "City of Southport."

An advertising trade card is an early predecessor to the modern business card. Businesses printed and distributed advertising trade cards starting before the turn of the century and the practice was common up until the 1920s or so. At that time they were largely replaced by modern-day-style business cards.

The Steamer "City of Southport" was owned and operated by Captain L.D. Potter during the 1910s and 1920s and made daily trips between Southport and Wilmington. The card is not dated, but likely dates from the late 1910s or early 1920s.

This is a rare advertising trade card and The Southport Times is happy to be able to add it to our collection of Southport area memorabilia. Adding to the rarity of this card is the fact that the card was signed by Captain L.D. Potter himself.
