Popular Local Historian Speaks At Next Brunswick Civil War Round Table

Chris E. Fonvielle, Jr., Ph.D.March 20, 2012 - Southport, NC - Well known and well respected historian, author and UNCW history professor Chris E. Fonvielle, Jr., Ph.D., will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Round Table on Tuesday, April 3rd. His presentation is entitled: "William B. Cushing: Incomparable Federal Naval Officer." The meeting will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash St., Southport, across from the Southport Post Office. Registration begins at 6:30. There is no admission fee to attend this meeting. However, guests are encouraged to become members of this fast-growing non-profit organization.

According to Max Williams, Round Table director and program chairman, "inviting Chris back to speak again this year on a subject that closely relates to this area of our state is a big bonus in this year's guest speaker schedule since he is such a knowledgeable and dynamic speaker. He has an incredible knowledge about the Civil War in Southeastern North Carolina and the Lower Cape Fear region. I feel certain he will draw a huge audience of both current members as well as guests who just want to know more about the Civil War days in this part of the state."

William B. CushingAs background, William B. Cushing is considered one of the navy’s greatest heroes of the Civil War. He was recognized for his daring and exceptional performance in battle, including the capture of Ft. Fisher. His military career culminated in torpedoing the Confederate ironclad Albemarle on the Roanoke River in 1864, an operation he executed under heavy enemy fire, and a feat for which he received the Thanks of Congress.

For guest attendees wishing to join, annual dues are $25 for individuals and couples, and $10 for students. Most of the proceeds go toward expenses incurred to invite the most interesting and knowledgeable speakers covering a wide variety of Civil War-related subjects.
