Time Around Wins $42,640 in
30th Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament

North Carolina (NC) - Gas
shortages and market fluctuations didn’t dampen the spirits at the
30th Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, the premier
event of the Southport Oak Island Area Chamber Of Commerce held this
past weekend at the newly renovated
Southport Marina. A large crowd of spectators watched as 437
boats from 8 states tried to take home one of the 100 cash prizes
totally over $116,000 in the all guaranteed money tournament.

Smith, Boat Owner & Crewmember Buck Smith, Southport and Crewmember
John Wrenn won top honors and bragging rights with a
40.20 pound king mackerel for a payoff of $42,640; while 2nd place
and $20,584 went to Chris Edens, Sr. aboard the Sarah Jo from
Wilmington, NC with a 39.40 pound king and the 38.20 pound king from
Bryan Rowley aboard the Wonbyland came in 3rd place for $12,056.

Chairman thanked the participants, the volunteers, sponsors and
foremost the staff and management of Southport Marina for their
support. From its beginning 30 years ago when community leaders
signed a promissory note guaranteeing the prize structure to event
structure today, the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament has strong
community roots and a commitment to the anglers in providing a fun
and safe event that everyone can enjoy.
Three hundred and five boats
weighed fish over the two days fishing. Proceeds from the tournament
benefit the Southport Oak Island Area Chamber Of Commerce. The
Southport Oak Island Area Chamber Of Commerce also supports the Long
Bay Artificial Reef Association, South Brunswick High School
Aquaculture program, Brunswick Community Foundation and an
Aquaculture student scholarship at Brunswick Community College.
