2007 U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament Results

October 8, 2007 – Southport, North Carolina (NC) - The 29th Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was held at the Southport Marina in Southport, North Carolina this weekend under partly sunny skies and 3-5 foot seas. The tournament drew 396 boats from 9 states and paid out over $114,000 in cash.

First place in the amount of $40,660 for a 41.35 pound king mackerel was awarded to Captain Charlie Fisher from Eden, NC and teammates – Jim Wade from Martinsville, VA; Chris Fisher from Eden, NC and Brad Fisher from Eden, North Carolina. Both Mr. Wade and Captain Fisher own residences in Oak Island, NC as well.

They were fishing in a 21’ Triumph named “Teezer” and caught their 41.35 pound king in an area called “Julie’s Rock”, approximately 7 miles off the Oak Island beach in about 45’ of water.

During the awards ceremony the team was quoted as saying “we would like to thank the tournament organizer Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, and Bob Black, with the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association ( LBARA ) who’s tireless efforts to provide fish habitats has paid off for us today.”
