(NC) - The Southport-Oak Island Christmas by the Sea Festival is
celebrating the lovely
weather by kicking off this year’s month long festival the weekend
of December 2nd on Oak Island.
It just wouldn’t be Christmas
without a parade. The Christmas by the Sea Festival Parade sponsored
by Cape Fear Coast Real Estate and Star News is an event of the
Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade aims to
please with its down home parade including homemade floats, lots of
children, queens, band and Santa & Mrs. Claus on Saturday, December
2nd at 3pm on Oak Island. Finding a place to watch the parade is not
a problem since the parade route is over two miles long, beginning
at 46th Street traveling Oak Island Drive to McGlamery Street on Oak
Island.
Music is a consistent theme
throughout the festival. The Southport-Oak Island Area is blessed
with a pool of talented artists. The Sea Notes Choral Society will
hold their annual concert on December 1st in Hatch Auditorium @ 8pm;
the Brunswick Concert Band will be in concert on December 14th in
Hatch Auditorium @ 7:30pm; the Brunswick County High School Bands
will present a concert on December 9th from 3pm-6pm @ Southport
Community Building and the Long Bay Symphony will present Handel’s
Messiah at Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium
at 3pm on December 3rd. Amahl Productions first ever performance of
the internationally acclaimed opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors”
will take place at 7pm on December 1st at St. Philip’s Episcopal
Church in Southport and again December 7th at Oak Island
Presbyterian Church.
On Sunday, December 3rd from
1pm-5pm the 20th Annual Oak Island Christmas Tour of Homes will
feature beautiful homes. The tour is sponsored by the Oak Island
Beautification Club. Tickets may be purchased the day of the tour
for $10.00 per person at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E.
Oak Island Drive where music and refreshments will be provided to
all on the tour. Advance tickets are on sale for $8.00 per person
locally at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce.
Events move to Southport for
the second week of festivities during the Christmas by the Sea
Festival. The delightful Southport Christmas Tour of Homes sponsored
by the Southport Historical Society takes you into some of the most
historic and interesting homes in Southport. Tour hours are from
2:00pm – 7pm. Stopping just in time for you to watch the Lighted
Holiday Boat Flotilla from Waterfront Park in Southport at
approximately 7pm. The cost of the home tour is $10 advance and $15
day of tour.
The finale event for the
festival is the Boiling Spring Lakes Flotilla and Dock Lighting at
6pm December 16th on the Big Lake in Boiling Spring Lakes.
