Will Sing 4 A Cure
- Local Father Helps Fight
Childhood Cancer
In November 2003, Nicholas
Black of Bolivia was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer,
called Neuroblastoma. Nicholas was 2 ˝ when the disease was
discovered. There are approximately 12,000 cases of pediatric cancer
diagnosed every year in the United States, with less than 800 being
Neuroblastoma.
Since then Nicholas has been
receiving treatment from the Duke University Medical Center, in
Durham, NC. His treatment protocol has included numerous
chemotherapies, radiation, multiple surgeries and a stem-cell
transplant. While receiving these grueling treatments, Nicholas
remained very positive and upbeat, taking everything in stride.
In June of this year, Nicholas
was declared in remission, where he remains to this day. He still
must visit Duke regularly for various reasons, including routine
scans and examinations.
He is scheduled to visit
Disneyworld in January 2005 as part of the Make-A-Wish program.
As a result of his cancer and
subsequent recovery, Nicholas’ father, Paul, a singer/songwriter has
started the “Will Sing 4 A Cure” program, with the assistance of the
Coastal Cinema, located in Shallotte.
On January 8, 2005 the “Will
Sing 4 A Cure” tour began at the Cinema with a tremendous turn-out
and response. Subsequent shows are scheduled at the cinema beginning
January 29, and Paul is looking for a variety of venues in
Wilmington, Southport, Little River, Myrtle Beach and the
surrounding area. If anyone is interested in hosting an event for
us, please contact us at 755-2421, or visit our website at
www.paulblackmusic.com.
Portions of the proceeds from
the shows will be used to provide assistance in research at Duke
University Medical Center for a cure of Neuroblastoma, as well as
help to provide the every-day needs of patients receiving
in-hospital care. Donations will also be sent to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation.
