Hazel Ervin Martin -
Oak Island
Hazel
Ervin Martin of Oak Island, and formerly Charlotte, NC
passed away Sunday, May 13th 2012 at Dosher Memorial
Hospital in Southport, after a brief illness.
Hazel was born at
home in 1926 in Winston-Salem. She was the second of
eight children of Robert and Myrtle Ervin. She graduated
from Bowman-Gray High school in Winston-Salem in 1943.
She earned an Associate Degree later in 1977 from
Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. After
High School, Hazel moved with her family to Knoxville,
Tenn. She worked at Oak Ridge during WWII and met her
husband J.B. Martin there. She and J.B lived in Michigan
after the war and her two children, Randy and Steve were
born there. In 1955 she and her family settled in
Charlotte where she lived for the next 36 years. Hazel
worked at the corporate offices of Harris-Teeter for 31
years. All who worked there during those years knew her.
She retired in 1991 and moved to Oak Island where she
enjoyed 21 years of retirement and made many friends and
memories. Hazel learned to sew at an early age and later
made her own business suits from patterns. She was good
with figures, loved to play senior bingo and never
missed watching “rasslin’” on T.V. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Martin
and youngest son, Steve A. Martin and sisters Iris Baker
and Bernice Ervin.
She is survived by her Son, Randy Martin of Mableton,
Ga. Her granddaughter Devon Hoyle and
great-grandchildren David Hoyle and Grace Hoyle of
Lincolnton, her siblings include: Brother Robert Ervin
Jr. (Aggie) of St. Augustine, Fla., sister Patricia
Hughes (Arnold) of Savannah, Ga., sister Nina Fletcher
(Hal) of Knoxville, Tenn., sister Barbara Stewart
(Shelton) of Greenwood, S.C. and Brother Ralph Ervin
(Aileen) of Lincoln, Neb, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 4:00 pm Wednesday, May
16, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island. The
family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 pm prior
to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First
Baptist Church of Oak Island, Building fund, 4608 East
Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, N.C. 28465.
