George
Wetmore, 87, of Saint James Plantation, died on
September 21, 2012.
He was born in
Boston, Massachusetts on July 27, 1925 to parents Elmer
and Blanche Wetmore. He grew up in Boston during the
difficult years of the Great Depression, learning the
importance of hard work and perseverance. When he was 16
years old, he entered the United States Navy, serving
until the end of World War II as one of the original
Navy Underwater Demolition Team. His name is on exhibit
in the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Ft. Pierce,
Florida.
George is survived
by his wife Susan, and his sister Blanche McFall. He was
the father of five children, Dennis, Jean, Richard,
Robert and Carol, grandfather to thirteen grandchildren
with many great-grandchildren as well. His children are
grateful for his lessons of hard work and integrity and
were proud to call him their father. They will all miss
him dearly.
George graduated from the University of Denver in 1954
and later moved to New Jersey. He took the job as
manager of the food portion in 1962, and later on
general manager, of Tavistock Country Club in Tavistock,
New Jersey. During his tenure at Tavistock, the country
club and food service grew to be one of the most
successful country club operations in the country and
was considered a model in the industry. He began Wetmore
Enterprises, a restaurant management company where he
managed other food services as well. For almost a
decade, George purchased and ran a nursery business,
Meadowbrook Nurseries in Barrington, New Jersey, in
addition to running his restaurant business. In 1990,
George sold his management business to his associate and
remained as consultant and a member at Tavistock Country
Club.
In 1993, George and Susan and moved to Saint James
Plantation. George faithfully played golf several times
a week and they enjoyed an active life with friends and
family. He was also an avid reader, consuming several
volumes a week.
There will be no funeral services at this time.
