Brunswick County, NC - Ready for a New Year's
Resolution which will benefit children, the
community and yourself? Then it’s time to become a
school volunteer.
Communities In Schools (CIS) provides the Adopt A
School and Volunteer Program to Brunswick County
Schools to enhance the quality of education by
bringing the community and its resources to the
children.
Volunteers are needed to work with children and
schools in a variety of ways: tutoring one-on-one,
reading or listening to a child read, joining a
child for lunch as a Lunch Buddy, participating in
Career Day as a speaker, proctoring a test, helping
with school fund raisers, assisting in the office or
classroom, working on special projects, and serving
on school committees. Volunteer opportunities vary
from school to school and in the amount of time
required, but all schools welcome community
involvement. "While volunteers are needed in most
schools, our greatest need is for mentors at Cedar
Grove, Shallotte and Leland Middle Schools. Come be
a lunch buddy and lend an ear" stated Linda Rumsey,
Dropout Prevention Director.
How
do you start? The first step to volunteering in the
schools is to attend one of the two-hour volunteer
orientations. (If you have done this in a previous
year you do not need to attend again.) There you
will learn about more specific ways of volunteering,
communication skills, math strategies, schools rules
and policies for volunteers, and who to contact at
each school. Each participant will also be required
to complete an application and a criminal background
check. Once the background check is approved, the
volunteer will be contacted by the school(s) in
which they indicated an interest.
Volunteer orientation locations and dates are
conveniently scheduled throughout the county:
