June 7th Civil War Round Table Meeting Announced
“The Texas Brigade At Gettysburg”

Susannah J. Ural, PhDMay 24, 2011 - Southport, NC - Attendees at the Tuesday, June 7th Brunswick Civil War Round Table meeting will learn about one of the bloodiest and hardest fought battles of the Civil War. The meeting will feature guest speaker, noted historian, author and Associate Professor Susannah J. Ural, PhD. Her presentation is entitled “The Texas Brigade at Gettysburg.” She will delve into this incredible phase of the war as Confederate Major General John Bell Hood’s Texans relentlessly battered the gritty Union defenders of the Southern Ridge of Little Round Top. Of the 5,353 men enlisted in the four regiments, only 617 remained to surrender on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

Dr. Ural is well qualified to speak on this important phase of the war. She specializes in 19th century America, with an emphasis on the socio-military experiences of Civil War soldiers, their motivations for service, and their ties to their families and the home front. Her unique presentation is a way to gain another perspective about the war as expressed in her current project: Hood’s Texans: A History of the Texas Brigade and Southern Society in the American Civil War.”

Her credentials and affiliations are most impressive: teaching for nine years at Sam Houston State University; University of Southern Mississippi faculty member and senior fellow in the USM’s Center for the Study of the Gulf South; an active member of several historical societies; is on the editorial board of The Journal of Military History” and the journal “War and Society;” and, writes a regular series for “Civil War Times Illustrated” that reviews websites focused on the U.S. Civil War era.

The June 7th meeting will be the last monthly meeting until the start of the fall meeting schedule on Tuesday, September 6th. All meetings are held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash St., Southport, across from the Southport Post Office. Registration begins at 6:30pm. Everyone is invited. The Round Table is a non-profit organization, dedicated to disseminate knowledge about the Civil War to area residents by inviting renowned historians and authors to be guest speakers each month.
