February 16,
2011 -
Southport, NC -
After a near record crowd attended the February 1st meeting to
hear
Charen Fink speak about women during the Civil War era, the
Brunswick Civil War Round Table has scheduled another
special guest speaker for its Tuesday, March 1st meeting. He is
historian Richard Starnes, Ph.D, whose presentation is entitled,
“Abraham Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief.”
President
Lincoln became one of the most active Commanders-in-Chief in
American history, directly influencing and managing events and
generals in every field of operations during the Civil War. With
the invention of the telegraph, he was able to more easily
communicate with far-off generals, thereby having a major impact
on the strategies and events throughout the war and its eventual
outcome.
As a
dedicated researcher, Department Head and Assoc. Professor of
History at Western Carolina University, Dr. Starnes is highly
qualified to speak about this celebrated and revered president.
He has authored three books; has researched and written numerous
articles and reviews about the Civil War era; and, was named
Hunter Scholar, 2003 – 2004. He is currently a Lt. Col. in the
U.S. Army Reserve, and following a tour of duty in Iraq, he now
commands a Reserve Battalion in Atlanta, GA.
The Tuesday,
March 1st meeting will be held at Trinity United Methodist
Church, 209 E. Nash St., Southport, across from the Southport
Post Office. Registration begins at 6:30. Everyone is welcome.
There is no admission fee, but non-members are encouraged to
join the Round Table. Annual dues are $25 for individuals and
families, and $10 for students. As a non-profit organization,
most of the dues collected go toward travel and related expenses
in order to invite the most renowned Civil War historians each
month.
