Nikki Fincannon> Midnight Lighthouse
looking up at the lights of the Oak Island
Lighthouse. The Lighthouse was completed in
1958 and stands 153 feet tall, however,
since it is on raised land, it is 169 feet
above sea level. There are 131 steps to the
lantern gallery, but rather than having the
typical spiral staircase, the Oak Island
Lighthouse consists of ship ladders.
Although this Lighthouse is owned by the
Town of Caswell Beach, since 2004, the U.S.
Coast Guard maintains the light.
Interesting Fact: Rather than paint the
cement exterior after being built, the paint
was mixed with the concrete. This practice
prevents paint from chipping off!
