Shallotte/South Brunswick CROP WALK

October 13, 2009 – Shallotte, North Carolina (NC) - Come rain or shine, many area residents are gearing up to join in the Shallotte/South Brunswick CROP WALK, on Sunday afternoon, Nov.8. The 5K (3.1-mile) walk will begin and end at Calvary Baptist Church, 623 Village Rd., Shallotte. Registration begins at 2 p.m. and step-off is at 2:40 p.m.

What is a CROP WALK? Local walk co-chairs Bill and Ruth Anne Campbell Grothe explain it as "neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting. As individuals we can make a difference!"

Organized locally by the South Brunswick Interchurch Council, the Shallotte/South Brunswick CROP WALK has set a goal of 150 Walkers and hopes to raise $10,000 to help stop hunger here in our community and, through self-help development initiatives, around the world. A portion of the funds raised here will go to the Shallotte Area Food Pantry operated by the South Brunswick Interchurch Council. The pantry serves, on average, more than 100 families each week, primarily from the South Brunswick area.

Last year, approximately 100 Shallotte/South Brunswick Walkers raised $7,512, of which $1,878 remained in the community. Since 1991the local walk has raised $108,042, of which $27,011 has been donated to the South Brunswick Interchurch Council to address local hunger needs.

The South Brunswick Interchurch Council is a nondenominational Christian organization that offers help and hope to neighbors in need. Member congregations work together to assist in the areas of food, clothing, shelter, utilities, life skills, and spiritual guidance.
