Oak Island,
North Carolina (NC) -
Tennis shoes, shorts, tank tops and sunscreen will be the uniform of
the day during the 10th Annual Oak Island Lighthouse 5K & 10K Run
and Walk. The run/walk will be held on Saturday, April 12 beginning
at 8:30 am.
Race day registration will be
held at the N.C. Baptist Assembly from 6:30 am-8:00 am. After
registering, participants will be bussed to the start area at the
Brunswick County Airport for the 10K and Caswell Beach Town Hall for
the 5K. Buses will depart the N.C. Baptist Assembly at 7:00 am, 7:30
am and 8:00 am. Pre-registration will also be available Friday,
April 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Chamber office at 4841 Long
Beach Road, Southport. Registration is $25.00. The first 500
participants will receive an official race T-Shirt or Tank-top
designed by Ricky Evans.
The 10K course begins with a
slight incline and decline while crossing the Oak Island Bridge. The
remainder of the route is flat asphalt as it winds around a
tree-lined residential area before crossing at Barbee Blvd. To Ocean
Drive and Caswell Beach Road. The Oak Island Lighthouse will beckon
runners and walkers home on the last section of the race with the
finish line at the N.C. Baptist Assembly.
The 5K Course is a flat
asphalt route which takes you on a scenic tour that includes
breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Oak Island
Lighthouse. Point to point race.
In 2007 winners of the 10K
were as followed, Sean Killeen, of Richmond, VA crossed the finish
line in 36:57 minutes to take home 1st Place overall male and
Suzanne Tulsey, of Oak Island, NC finished in 41:07 minutes for 1st
Place overall female.
In 2006 the Oak Island
Lighthouse Run/Walk added a 5K race to the event. The second annual
5K winner was Louis Pelsang, of Morehead City, NC crossing the
finish line in 18:34. Top female in the 5K went to Morgan Turner, of
Boger City at a time of 19:57.
Oak Island Lighthouse prints
by renowned artist Ricky Evans will be given to the top three
runners overall male/female and top three runners in each age group.
Age brackets are divided as such: 18 and under 19-24; 25-29; 30-34;
35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; and 65+. Also two seasoned
awards will be given to the oldest participant finishing the 5K and
10K.
The Wilmington Roadrunners
will be on hand to tally the results. For more information or
