Southport, North Carolina (NC) – The Southport Times has unveiled
their collection of Southport area postcards for
public viewing. The Southport Times is the proud owner of the
largest known collection of Southport area postcards. The collection
includes vintage postcards of Southport, Oak Island and Bald Head
Island dating back to the early 1900s and includes very rare
postcards of the Cape Fear Lighthouse, the Price’s Creek Lighthouse,
the Oak Island Life Saving Station and more. The collection also
includes modern postcards dating through the current year.
The Southport Time’s postcard
collection currently contains over 200 postcards and chronologically
portrays the history of the Southport area using postcard
photographs as the medium. The collection provides valuable insight
as to what the Southport area has looked like in years gone by.
The collection has been
obtained by The Southport Times card by card through eBay, postcard
shows and through postcard dealers over the past two years. The
collection is valued at more than $2,000.00. Modern cards purchased
at local stores have cost as little as $0.25. The 1939 postcard of
the Price’s Creek Lighthouse cost $79.00.
The collection has been
converted to digital format by The Southport Times for online
viewing. The original postcards have been stored in acetate-free
postcard sleeves in a low humidity environment to maintain the
integrity of this historical collection.
