American Wine Society

Press Release

January 2, 2006 – Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina (NC) - Sunny Las Vegas was the site for the 2005 American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition. Fifteen panels of certified judges and industry professionals evaluated the 981 entries in the two day event. This year, the judges awarded 92 Gold, 213 Silver, and 224 Bronze medals to 166 wineries. Entries were received from twenty-eight states, three Canadian Provinces, as well as Argentina, Australia, Chile, Germany, Italy, Spain and Korea. Amongst those entries were a handful of North Carolina wineries representing the “Old North State,” including Silver Coast Winery, the only one in Brunswick County.

Silver Coast Winery unwrapped two Bronze medals for the Holiday Season, both distinguishing elegant red wines; a 2002 Merlot and a 2004 Touriga. The merlot is described as a wine possessing “red plum and ripe raspberry fruit, a deeper cassis core with hints of vanilla and cardamom spice. A lovely, lighter style merlot with firm structure and warmth.” Touriga is summed up as a wine with “deep wild berry notes with nice accents of ripe dark cherry skin, a nice take of a classic Portuguese varietal. This Touriga also has a complex undercurrent of roasted chestnut, tobacco leaf and coffee beans. This is a wonderful example of a more rustic, old-world style wine.” The winery produces small quantities of higher quality wines and has received many awards for both red and white bottlings.

Silver Coast Winery, located just 15 minutes from the beach in a woodland setting near Ocean Isle Beach NC offers daily wine tastings and tours. The winery also has unique gift shops, eclectic art gallery, extensive picnic grounds and a beautiful barrel room for weddings and special events.
