North Carolina (NC) - Bald
Head Island’s 14th annual Fishing Rodeo, held June 3-4 on Bald Head
Island, attracted 29 boats and crews from across North Carolina to
compete for the top prize.
"This year’s fishing rodeo was
an exciting and close competition," said Trisha Howarth, Hospitality
Sales and Marketing Director for Bald Head Island Limited. "And the
gorgeous waters around Bald Head Island were the perfect setting in
which to enjoy the competition and camaraderie of a fishing
tournament.”
Captain David Marshall and
crew of Carolina Beach, fishing aboard Musicman, reeled in the
first-place prize of $8,571.43. The winning catch weighed in at
338.55 pounds.
Second-place winner Captain D.
Pierce and crew aboard the Blue Marlin won $4,285.71 for their
249.80 pound catch, and third-place prize of $2,571.43 went to
Captain Ben Smith and crew, fishing aboard Stream Weaver.
The billfish “tournament
within a tournament” tag and release competition — where sail fish,
blue, and white marlin are tagged and release — was also held this
weekend. Captain Doyle Parish, aboard the Marquesa, was first to
reach the number of points necessary to win the tournament and
receive the $1,980.00 prize. Second place and $1,188.00 went to
Captain Ben Smith aboard Stream Weaver, while the third place prize
of $792.00 went to Captain Robbie Jones aboard Musicman.
This year’s competition saw a
large number of Lady and Junior Anglers competing in their
respective categories for heaviest fish. Leslie Smith aboard Reel
Quick took the Lady Anger trophy by reeling in a 44.4 pound wahoo.
Kyle Zipter aboard Implusive earning the Junior Angler trophy by
reeling in a 23.7 pound dolphin.
Catches from the two-day event
totaled 3,140.35 pounds combined in all categories. The average
weight of the 156 fish caught during the tournament was 20.13
pounds.
